Undergraduate Degrees

At the moment, the Department of Library and Information Science offers the following undergraduate programmes/qualifications. A Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS), Bachelor of Arts-Information Science (BIS),

The BLIS program takes four years to complete and consists of 512 credits. The program offers knowledge, skills and attitudes for professional information management and service in libraries, in particular, and in information centers in general.

The BIS program takes three years and has 384 credits. It is aimed at jobs in the broad information field both within the public and corporate domains. The program offers students knowledge and skills in information and knowledge management in the public and corporate domains.


 
Postrgraduate Degrees

Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science (AIDIP1), Honours-Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS-HON), Diploma in Specialized Education: School Library Science (AIDIP2), Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and a Ph.D.

The AIDIP1 is open to candidates with degree qualifications other than Library and Information Science or its equivalent who wish to pursue careers in Library and Information management and service. The program takes one year full-time to complete.

The BLIS -Honours is a postgraduate degree programme offered to aspirants who already have BLIS or PGDLIS or their equivalent qualification and obtained 60 % average marks in LIS subjects offered for the duration of study and wish to pursue advanced study in LIS. The program takes one year full-time or two years part-time and consists of six courses. Candidates who wish to proceed to the Masters level must take an additional one year full-time or two years part-time study. The Diploma in Specialized Education School Library Science is open to candidates with at least a three years Teachers Diploma or BEd.degree to pursue librarianship careers in school libraries or school media and resource centers. Masters and doctoral degrees focus on candidates preparing to occupy senior information management positions, LIS theory and research and for academics.
